The unannounced visit is less “property inspection” and more a hobby, the landlord equivalent of someone who insists on “just checking in” way too often, where the checking in has nothing to do with actual concern and everything to do with control. No building needs weekly surveillance. Buildings are famously very still. They don’t do much. The only thing actually being monitored is the tenant.

Selective enforcement might be the funniest recurring bit in landlord behavior generally, because it reveals that “rules” were never really about safety, they were about picking a target. Somebody could be operating an entire underground economy on the front lawn and get total silence, while a three-month-old fixed problem gets treated like a war crime. The rulebook only opens for certain names.

Repairs becoming a punishment tool is peak landlord chess, if chess were played with mold instead of pawns. The second a repair guy shows any sympathy toward a tenant, suddenly parts are “on backorder” forever. It’s maintenance turned into leverage, a slow-drip form of psychological warfare where the weapon is a broken shower seal instead of anything requiring actual creativity.

And the house rules, the real crown jewel of landlord absurdity: no fans, no extension cords, no guests past a week, as if the building’s structural integrity hinges on a box fan rather than the decade of neglect actually holding it together. Somewhere along the way, “landlord” quietly became “unlicensed warden,” running a rental like a probation program where comfort has to be earned through obedience, and somehow still collecting rent on time for the privilege.
